May Meeting and Future

I know this email has been very delayed since the last meeting, I have been tied up with some personal issues and I apologize for that. In this email I would to open up to the group and get some ideas of what would you would like at our next meeting.

  • May Meeting and Thank you!
I would like to thank Andrew Minerd and Mike Lively for their informative presentations during our last meeting at UNLV. I would also like to thank Nita Tuna and her associates for helping to bring the meeting together, without her and her people we wouldn't have been able to get the room at UNLV. Thank you! Pictures of the meeting are at the meetup site. I have some video from the meeting the needs to be edited and uploaded, once I get around to those I will post them.

  • PHP TestFest
During the last meeting we did touch on the subject about the PHP TestFest. As far as I am aware we can still help out, Mike Lively is our group Mentor.

  • Future Meetings
The tentative date for the next meeting is June 19 but we haven't talked about what would be discussed and where we should hold the meeting. This is where I am calling on the group to please submit some ideas of locations and topics for the next meeting. These meetings are about what you want so any input would be greatly appreciated, your feedback and support is what will help the group.

  • Meetup Site
Meetup.com is going to be providing more services and APIs in the near future, with that noted I would like to invite all of you to complete your Meetup profiles. Many of you I do not get to talk to or meet until we have the meetings, your profiles help me understand everyone in the groups interests and help open the door of communication within the group.

We have a healthy number of members in the group and I look forward to seeing the group grow.

May Meeting Confirmed

We are coming up to our May Meeting and we are excited by what we have planned. In this letter I'll go over what is new and we are looking for in the future.

  • Meeting Location
Unlike our previous location which was at PT and very informal this location is more formal and structured. We are very lucky to be able to meet at the UNLV Student Building and hopefully we can get this location in the future. We recommend that if you have wireless devices such as a PDA or Laptop to bring them for taking notes or collaborating with other members. We will try to have wireless internet access available.

  • Information about the Meeting
We'll start the meeting out with a presentation with Mike Lively & Andrew Minerd about PHP's CLI interface. Mike and Andrew will be going to the 2008 DC PHP conference and we are honored to have them test their material with our group. We will also try to make time and disucss PHPUnit and the PHP TestFest.

  • Group Future
I have been contacted by several groups that are interested in giving presentations to the group about their technologies. That being said I would like to get input from all of you about what information you would like to get from these meetups. Getting everyones ideas will help us as individuals and also help the group grow.

  • User Group Members
We have had a large surge in members and I would like to personally welcome everyone to the group. I would also take this time to ask that all members to fill out their profiles to help us communicate and get to know each other better. Feel free to also pass the word to others.

  • Communication
In the beginning we has some misunderstandings about the use of the mailing list. The mailing list will be limited to posting updates about the meetup so other members are not spamed with information. We have enabled the message boards on the meetup site so we have an open forum to communicate. Please feel free to use the message boards as you wish but please refrain for solicitation.

I hope to see all of you on the 15th!

May's Meeting and Updates

The The Las Vegas PHP May Meeting is a month away and we are already preparing for what is coming up. This meeting will primarily be focusing on Tests with and for PHP.

  • Meeting Location
We are currently looking for a venue to hold our meetings at, our last meeting was at PT's and I'm sure we all know that isnt an ideal place to hold our monthly meetings. We've had some ideas past around from contacts at UNLV to using the public library. There is an issue with using the public library as we would have to declare that we are a non-profit organization in order to freely use their meeting rooms. Since we in the beginning stages of our group (and as of right now have no legal representation) we don't have the means or funds to qualify for non profit organization status (ironic). We are open to any suggestions on locations so if anyone in the group has and idea or resource feel free to share.

  • Members Projects and Ideas
Talking with other members in the group I have found we have quite a few personal projects and ideas floating around that are either in their idea stages or have been developed but could use some support. If you are interested in either looking for help or helping with a project please contact me to incorporate it with a future meeting about collaborating efforts for new and existing projects. We have a great set of minds amongst us and together I'm sure great things could arise.

  • Ideas and Support
The group is open to ideas for further meetings and concepts, as we continue to come together more we may need people to bring resources to help. If there is a topic you would like to see a meeting about or are looking for any kind of support don't be afraid to contact the group as I'm sure many of us would be willing to help.

Again thanks to everyone for the help and support,
Ray Lopez

Great first meeting!

Great job guys, this meeting was a total sucess! Today was a very informal gathering but we made alot of headway in finding the direction we should take this group. For those who didn't make it we hope to have you come out next time. For those who did show and have already got an email from me pass that email to your friends and invite them to join us. :)

I am proud to see this many people from the start but it's not over yet, we still need to spread the word. If you haven't done so please come to the meetup site and become a part of the action and mention us to your friends and colleagues. Again great job guys and looking forward to the next meeting.

Can't wait for next months meetup where we will have speakers talking about PHPUnit and collaborating together to help with the TestFest event.

We are still looking for a location to hold out meetings so far some possibilities are UNLV and maybe a public library. More to come on that but for now here is the link to the next meeting The Las Vegas PHP May Meeting.

Again thanks to everyone that showed up!

First Meetup!

Today's the day everyone! Though this meeting is going to be open and social I'm open to suggestions of what we should discuss and ideas for future meetups.

Some of the topics I think we should address:

  • Introducing ourselves and getting to know each other.
  • Recommend locations and times for future meetups.
  • What objectives we would like to accomplish during these meetups.
  • Talk about other PHP events and new resources.

Please feel free to reply back to the list with any suggestions.
Thanks,
Ray Lopez

Just a Reminder!

This Friday is our 1st meeting! If you know anyone who might be interested in attending please bring them along. Like I've said before this is a very impromptu meeting to communicate mix ideas and that will help in future meetups.

If you have any questions or comments they would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for Support

If anyone wants to help with the group in any sort of way I am open to any suggestions. Currently I have started the group myself since I have in the past tried to find ones in Las Vegas yet no one has created a group.
